In this unit, we will learn the basic greetings in Quechua. In the dialogs that you will observe, pay attention to the key terms like the ablative manta<\/em><\/strong> that indicated \u00abplace of origin\u00bb, as well as the term kay <\/em><\/strong>that means \u00abto be\u00bb. In the same way, we invite you to complete the exercises presented in this unit and listen to the audios that accompany each dialog.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

NOTE: The ablative <\/em>manta<\/em><\/strong> Also refers to a specific topic of conversation (but we will address this in later units). <\/em>For example: Quechuamanta<\/strong> rimashani \u2013 I am talking about Quechua.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The use of the ablative manta<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Manta = can mean \u00abfrom, since, about\u00bb. In this case, we will learn to indicate where a person is from.
We will use it in sentences that respond to questions of origin, for example: From where?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Let's look at the following sentences that use the ablative manta:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. \u00bfMaymanta<\/strong> kanki? | Where are you from?<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  2. Qusqumanta<\/strong> kani, \u00bfqamr\u00ed maymanta<\/strong>kanki? | I am from Cusco (Cusco in Quechua is Qosqo)<\/em> and you? Where are you from?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    When we say Qusqumanta kani<\/em><\/strong> literally we are saying \u00abfrom Cusco I am\u00bb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    And other examples when we say I am<\/strong> from a determined place:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Abancaymanta kani (I am from Abancay),
    Limamanta kani (I am from Lima)
    Punomanta kani (I am from Puno)
    Boliviamanta kani (I am from Bolivia)
    Ecuadormanta kani (I am from Ecuador), among others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    And other examples when we say you are<\/strong> from a determined place:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Let's look at this conversation:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      And other examples when we say you are<\/strong> from a determined place:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Limamanta kanki (you are from Lima),
      Paucartambumanta kanki (you are from Paucartambo)
      Ayavirimanta kanki (you are from Ayaviri)
      Parurumanta kanki (you are from Paruro)
      Ecuadormanta kanki (you ar\u0119 from Ecuador), among others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Let's look at more examples, and pay attention to the ablative manta <\/strong>which indicates place of origin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Next, pay attention to the images from different places, the word llaqta<\/em><\/strong> refers to \u00abplace\u00bb whether that be city, village, small town, community, etc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      When we say Andahuaylas llaqta <\/em><\/strong>we say city or village or small town of Andahuaylas. For example, we can say Andahuaylas llaqta, Huancavelica llaqta, Curahuasi llaqta, Qosqo llaqta, among others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Also, we can add \u00abmanta\u00bb after llaqta. For example, if you are from the city of Lima, you can say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      *Limamanta<\/strong> kani \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 or\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 *Lima llaqtamanta<\/strong> kani<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Let's look at more conjugations:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      It's the same when we say were some in the second person (you) is from, we can say \u00abmanta\u00bb after llaqta. For example, if the person is from the city of Abancay, you can say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      *Abancaymanta<\/strong> kanki \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 or\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 *Abancay llaqtamanta<\/strong> kanki<\/p>\n\n\n\n
